Late Snow in Sharphill Wood

A painting hidden for years is now available to view and obtain prints of at the ‘HENRY BREWER GALLERY’ in West Bridgford town centre.

‘LATE SNOW IN SHARPHILL WOOD’ by Elizabeth Hilda Smart (1900 -1992) was consigned to Council storage and unseen by the people of Rushcliffe for whom it was intended. ‘LATE SNOW’ is a striking wintry landscape which expertly captures the much loved, well sledged and walked slopes of Sharphill.

The view is from Boundary Road where Hilda Smart was living in 1959 when ‘LATE SNOW’ was exhibited at the prestigious SOCIETY OF WOMEN ARTISTS. Hilda Smart was a regular exhibitor in London, Nottingham Castle Art Gallery and the Nottingham Society of Artists in Friar Lane.

When Rushcliffe Borough Council announced it would sell off its Art Collection at auction in November 2015 the SHARPHILL ACTION GROUP, which continues to campaign to protect the Sharphill environment, realised the intrinsic value of the painting and acquired it for the community.

The immediate result is a joint venture with the HENRY BREWER GALLERY to view the original painting and obtain prints made more valuable by the impending loss of local Sharphill landscapes to large scale development.
